When neurosurgeon Dr. Samuel Sheppard called his neighbours on the morning of July 4, 1954, they found the doctor apparently disoriented and in shock, while his wife Marilyn had been bludgeoned to death. The subsequent trial was marred by controversy, not least due to the inflammatory coverage by the press, and his conviction was overturned 12 years later in a retrial by the U.S. Supreme Court. The question of who actually killed Marilyn Sheppard remains open to this day.
This episode was made in 1992, 8 years before the 2000 civil trial involving Dr. Sheppard's son where he failed to prove his father had been wrongfully imprisoned.
