TechBits: In 1958, Jack Kilby at Texas Instruments built the first working integrated circuit. It combined multiple electronic parts into a single chip and proved that electronics could be made much smaller and more powerful.

A year later, Robert Noyce at Fairchild Semiconductor came up with his own version using silicon. His design made it easier to mass-produce and became the foundation of all modern microchips.

Together, Kilby and Noyce sparked the age of microelectronics. Every smartphone, computer, and digital device today can be traced back to this breakthrough.
