The mid 90s was a strange time for Eastern Europe. The Soviet Union had been formally dissolved, giving birth to a series of new countries. Clearly the most important of these was Russia. There was a real chance Russia could have become an ally of the west, at one time the idea of Russia joining NATO was floated. But for whatever reason that never happened, and before long both sides of the cold war soon began again to see each other as the enemy. This is the story of a little known incident between them and Norway that could have ended incredibly badly.
