In 2010, a mysterious hacker broke into NASA and accessed restricted servers. He connected his computer to the network and ran a program called RemotelyAnywhere. He used the program to grab as many top-secret files as possible, all hidden deep within U.S. government databases.
Since the hacker infiltrated their computers during the night, he believed he would never get caught. But he still couldn't find what he was looking for.
Throughout the next year, he went on to breach countless government systems, from naval weapon stations to Air Force bases to outer-space research facilities to even the Pentagon. It got so bad that he accidentally caused a massive military computer outage in Washington, D.C.
But then, he found what he was looking for.
Deep within the computers in building 8 of NASA's Johnson Space Center, there was a trove of unprocessed, highly classified pictures of what seemed to be UFOs. But just as the pictures began to load on his screen, the UK National Hi-Tech Crime Unit raided his apartment in London, U.K.
The hacker’s name was Gary McKinnon, and all he wanted was to find proof of UFOs in government systems, so that he could share his findings with the world.
