When Christian missionaries arrived in China, they encountered an ancient, complex, and nuanced culture that presented its own unique opportunities for and challenges to evangelization. China's ancient intellectual and religious traditions are classically divided into what is known as the "Three Teachings (Sanjiao 三教)," or Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. This talk will outline the key figures and ideas behind these three "Teachings," especially Confucianism and Daoism.

Anthony E. Clark is the Edward B. Lindaman Endowed Chair at Whitworth University, the Distinguished Combe Trust Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, and an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in London. He is regarded as one of the most influential scholars of China’s Catholic culture and history. He has published several books, including China's Saints: Catholic Martyrdom during the Qing (1644-1911), Heaven in Conflict: Franciscans and the Boxer Uprising in Shanxi, China Gothic: The Bishop of Beijing and His Cathedral, and China's Catholics in an Era of Transition.
