Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report. For this week's video, I am taking the thellō Night Train from Venezia Santa Lucia (Venice) to Paris Gare de Lyon.
This service is a very useful connection between Venice, Milan, and Paris, running once every night in each direction. At least, that's what I would say had this service not been cancelled earlier this year. Hopefully, it will return, but if not then this video should serve as an interesting preservation of its legacy.
Prior to withdrawal, the thellō service was operated by Trenitalia, with this night train, and the day trains between Milano and the South of France also forming part of the international brand.
The journey starts at Venezia Santa Lucia right next to the canals, before traversing the bridge to Venezia Mestre on the mainland. After this, the train runs to Milano Centrale at a decent speed (although slower than the high-speed services also plying this route). From Milano, the train runs non-stop towards the French border at Modane, where the locos are swapped, before continuing on to Dijon-Ville in France. After a pause here, the train resumes its journey towards Paris Gare de Lyon, service breakfast in this last leg.
