The brutal Ugandan dictator was overthrown in a coup in 1979 and forced into exile.
Idi Amin was a Ugandan politician and military officer who seized power in a military coup in 1971. He ruled Uganda with an iron fist, using torture and violence to maintain his grip on power.
However, his brutal tactics eventually led to his downfall. In 1978, Amin ordered the invasion of Tanzania, which proved to be a disastrous decision. The Tanzanian army, aided by Ugandan exiles, launched a counter-attack and quickly overpowered Amin's forces. As the Tanzanian troops closed in on the Ugandan capital of Kampala, Amin fled into exile in Saudi Arabia. He became known as the "Butcher of Uganda" for his brutal human rights abuses, and his reign of terror left an estimated 300,000 people dead. Amin's downfall was a result of his own hubris and penchant for violence.
He clung to power at all costs, even launching disastrous military campaigns that ultimately led to his demise. In the end, his regime was doomed to fall as a result of his own actions.
