* HISTORY*
The Limes has the date 1893 in a gable end. This would be when it was built, perhaps for William Jackson the first recorded resident, recorded in a trade directory of 1896; and by then already known as The Limes. He had retired by 1911 and continued being a Barlaston parish councillor to 1916. In 1911 his two sons Cecil Barcroft Jackson, aged 24, a motor engineer, and Vincent Harry Orwell, aged 18, a law student, are recorded in the census here. William died aged 74 in 1922, and has a grave in Barlaston cemetery; his wife Mary died in 1894. Their only daughter Miss Lilian Mary Jackson, married Joseph Roger Brown in the parish church in July 1911. By 1924 The Limes was the residence of Victor F. Johnson, to his death in 1928, aged only 41. He was the director of Johnson Bros, Hanley, pottery manufacturers. The Limes is advertised for sale by auction at the North Stafford Hotel, Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffs Advertiser April 5 and 12 1930 (this newspaper article might have reference to the arboretum, which probably by then would be in existence). I suspect the Gills are here by July 1931, then advertising for a cook-housekeeper. Dr Alexander William Gill M.D. occurs here in trade directories 1932, 1936, 1940, J Carter 1945/6, Dr AW Gill 1945/6; the Gills hosted a few medical parish charities/ war effort functions – in July 1937 they hosted the annual meeting of the Barlaston and Tittensor Nursing Association; in June 1940 they hosted a coffee morning for the Barlaston and Tittensor Red Cross Hospital Supply Depot. Dr Gill died 30 August 1948 aged 60, and his widow sold the fixtures and then the property by auction at Heywood & Sons’ The Priory salerooms, Stone, in Feb 1949. The Staffordshire Sentinel (2 June 1949) notes that there is a proposal for the property to be used for an educational purpose … which will be the Wedgwood Memorial College being sited here; indeed a warden is in residence by Sept 1950 (Staffs Advertiser Sept 2 1950). Hitherto the College had been at Barlaston Hall. The centenary of the Great Exhibition 1851 was the subject of a weekend residential school arranged by the Stafford Branch of the Workers’ Educational Association here in June 1951. From then The Limes was the Wedgwood Memorial College until 2012 when its trustee/ owners University of Keele and Stoke-on-Trent City Council had it closed. Its garden was to be included in the ‘Gardens of England & Wales 1992’ (The Yellow Book); the parish council hired a room within The Limes (and Estoril) for their meetings between at least 1988-2005. The Barlaston Men's Society held their fourth and last? Xmas dinner at The Limes in Dec 2010. In c2019 the college finally sold to some development company who currently own the two sites – The Limes and Estoril.
Although Esperanto House (Murder house) at Estroil, the British HQ and Library of the International Language, opened 2002, remains open with that organistation on a 99 year lease.
The Limes Bungalow. This seems to have been built by 1930 (Staffs Sentinel July 11 1930). And was occupied by T.O. McWilliams in 1945/6; the wedding of Lance-Corp Thomas Clifford M Clement Williams, younger son of Mr and Mrs T Williams of Limes Bungalow to a Miss Bromley of Congleton took place in July 1944. ...
