When a suffering patient is sitting in front of you and you don't have a holistic toolkit to help them, it's easy to think: "I don't know what to do about your terrible social situation or your existential angst — but I can prescribe you this pill." That instinct, he says, has driven a lot of the over-prescription and misuse of psychiatric medications. Sometimes the deeper need can't be solved at the pharmacy.
