Inevitably, when the biblical gospel of God’s grace is preached, questions arise about the Old Testament Law. If the Law was not meant to save men by their own works, why did God give it? The Apostle Paul uses two powerful analogies to explain how the Law functions in relation to God's promise:
A Gracious Prison: The Law captures all humanity under sin, shutting every mouth and removing all excuses so that we recognize our total inability to save ourselves.
A Guardian and Tutor: The Law acted as a strict disciplinarian, guiding and guarding God's people historically until the arrival of the promised Messiah.
Discover how the Law historically prepared the way for Christ and personally convicts us today, shattering our self-righteousness. When sinners stop trying to save themselves and place their faith entirely in Jesus, the Law has fulfilled its purpose. We are no longer under the condemnation of the Law, but have been brought into full sonship through salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
