Rodgers is not related to the Country singer Jimmie C. Rodgers (1897 - 1933) who died the same year the younger Rodgers was born his official songwriting credits is often credited as Jimmie F. Rodgers to differentiate the two. He learned how to play the piano and guitar during his childhood. Musician, actor, guitarist, pianist of the Pop Music and Folk genres, he scored numerous Top 40 singles on the American Pop Charts including the gold records Honeycomb (1957), Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (1957) Oh-Oh, Im Falling In Love Again (1958) and Secretly (1958). Following service with the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he began performing on the night club circuit and had an appearance on the TV program Arthur Godfreys Talent Scouts. After securing a contract with the Roulette label, he would go on to place 14 singles on the Top 40 charts between 1957 and 1967 beginning with Honeycomb which achieved number one status for four weeks in 1957. His popularity led to his own TV variety series The Jimmie Rodgers Show in 1959, in addition to performing on such programs as American Bandstand, The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, Shindig! and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Rodgers also found acting parts in motion pictures including the starring role in The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come (1961) and Backdoor to Hell (1964) which co-starred a young Jack Nicholson. In 1967, Rodgers signed a new deal with A&M Records, and his career was looking up; his song Child of Clay rose to number 31 on the singles charts, and his first album for the label was faring well. But his good luck abandoned him on December 1, 1967; an assailant brutally beat Rodgers and left him with a severe skull fracture that had to be repaired with a metal plate. While he survived the attack, it left him with ongoing health problems that often interfered with his career (including a recurring case of spasmodic dysphonia, a condition that impacts the vocal cords and makes it difficult to sing), and he would record only three more albums after 1967 including Windmills of Your Mind though he hosted a summer replacement TV series in 1969 and was a guest on Johnny Cashs variety show in 1970. In time, Rodgers recovered to the point that he could return to performing in the late 1990s, playing nightclubs and appearing in a Branson, Missouri show called Golden Girls U.S.A. In 2007, he successfully underwent surgery that removed the plate in his head after his fracture finally healed, and in 2010 he published his memoirs, Dancing on the Moon: The Jimmie Rodgers Story. Rodgers spent the last years of his life living quietly in Palm Springs, California; he died on January 18, 2021 at the age of 87. #Pop #Singer #Folk$
