This video stresses the importance of the quality of surface you paint on.

Alan gives us an insight to the quality and sturdiness of the product, while my input is all about the results once you paint on it!
You won't really appreciate the difference it could make till you give it a go.
Claessens canvas is available in many grades of weave from very fine to coarse grain. I like to use the coarse stuff for bigger pieces and slightly finer for smaller.
If your application is thick and vigorous go for the coarse. If its detailed, delicate or thinly applied, the fine grain would suit. Claessens no. 66 is somewhere in between. I use the no. 19 for coarse weave.
If you're working in acrylic, you'll have to go for universal primed. Oil can be applied to both universal and oil primed.
There's also a little feature on their board.
