Jim Henson’s The Storyteller finally comes to Blu-ray in the UK from Fabulous Films, collecting both the original fairy-tale series starring John Hurt and the Greek Myths spin-off. The packaging is solid and includes a collectors booklet… but unfortunately, the video quality is very poor.
This appears to be a simple upscale of the old DVDs, with aggressive digital smoothing that destroys fine detail. Puppetry, makeup and costumes look waxy, flat and unnatural — a huge disappointment for fans of practical effects and Jim Henson’s craftsmanship.
