Nuns in nineteenth-century Ireland were not only women of prayer, but social entrepreneurs too, founding and running factories and cottage industries aimed at lifting families and communities out of crushing poverty. Among the most famous of them, is the lace-making cooperative founded by the Poor Clares of Kenmare.
