The Roman Republic's history began with its founding and a transition from a monarchy to a mixed government. Over time, Rome, initially a small city-state, became a dominant power in the Mediterranean through a series of military conquests, most notably the Punic Wars against Carthage. However, the Republic's success led to internal strife, as powerful generals like Marius, Sulla, and Julius Caesar amassed personal armies and challenged the authority of the state. This power struggle culminated in a civil war between Caesar and Pompey, ultimately ending with Caesar's victory. After Caesar's assassination, his heir Octavian (later known as Augustus) defeated his rivals, marking the final end of the Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
