駐 is composed of 馬 (horse) and 主 (master, lampstand). 主 is a pictograph of a lampstand, a place where fire remains and continues to burn. Originally, 駐 meant the halting of carriages and horses. Horses were a primary means of transportation and held significant military importance in ancient times, so 駐 came to describe armies stationed or garrisoned at a place.
