I'm willing to bet that almost everything you've been taught about keeping readers hooked is aimed at the wrong target.
You've heard it a hundred times — tighten the plot, raise the stakes, and end every chapter on a cliffhanger so they have to turn the page. You do all of it, and the story moves, because things are happening. The action is there and you think you've nailed it.
But then your reader closes the book somewhere around chapter four and doesn't come back.
