In 1980, Queen were named Band of the Year by *Circus Magazine* in the US, and Freddie was presented with a gold Shure 565 SD microphone to mark the occasion. It is the same model he famously used on stage throughout his career, built for those powerful, high-energy performances he was known for.
But this microphone was never just about the award.
Peter Hince, Freddie’s personal roadie for over a decade, was the one responsible for looking after his gear every night on tour. At some point, Freddie gifted the microphone to him лично, saying, “You look after my microphones and things. You should have the award.” It is a small moment that says a lot about the trust between them behind the scenes.
The microphone even made an appearance on *Top of the Pops* in 1982 during Queen’s performance of “Las Palabras de Amor,” linking it directly to the band’s on-screen history as well.
