Some days everything goes right. The water is calm. The fish are biting. The sun is out and there’s nowhere else on earth you’d rather be.
And then everything turns on you without warning.
Tonight’s story takes place on one of the thousands of isolated river systems that wind through the Daniel Boone National Forest in eastern Kentucky.
AJ is in his early thirties. He launched his small johnboat into the spillway river system below A Lake on what looked like a perfect fishing day. Miles downstream, alone, phone turned off, no one knowing exactly where he was, a freak storm hit without warning and turned that glass calm water into a raging muddy current his trolling motor couldn’t fight.
He had no choice but to tie off and wait it out.
That’s when he saw something on the opposite bank.
Something the storm had flushed out of the deep woods.
Something that saw him too.
And something that was very interested in the shallow section of river sitting between them just a quarter mile downstream.
AJ never went back to that river. Never fished alone again. Never told anyone what he saw out there.
Until now.
If you’ve had a real encounter that you’ve never told anyone reach out to me. Your name stays out of it if you want. You will be heard here.
