This episode of The History Guy provides a haunting look at how political violence and systemic fraud were used to disenfranchise a generation of voters and reshape the American South for nearly a century. The election of 1876 was so marred by antics that the eventual winner, Rutherford B Hayes, was referred to by opponents as “Your Fraudulecy.” But the issues were not just national - statewide offices were just as much part of the fraud and violence as the presidential one was. In South Carolina violence erupted from both sides, and for months the state existed with two separate governments.
