The policies and pronouncements of the second Trump administration have, to say the least, created strain in the transatlantic relationship, affecting the United States, its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the European Union. In parallel to unprecedented trade, investment, and regulatory developments, the security aspects of the relationship have been put into sharp relief by Russia’s continued war in Ukraine and increasingly aggressive actions against other European countries.
Is the damage reparable, and if so, under what conditions? How does the current strain affect relations within NATO, and between the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other European countries? How do the current challenges compare with past episodes of the 80-year-old transatlantic security partnership?
