The Philip’s Centre is a charity established in Leicester in 2006. The city is highly diverse, with significant Christian, Muslim and Hindu populations. Although it has traditionally been seen as a city where multiculturalism has been very successful, in recent years it has experienced some unrest and violence, in particular involving Muslim and Hindu young people. Like Corrymeela, the St Philip’s Centre has a Christian ethos, working under the auspices of the Church of England; however, it also employs people from outside the Christian tradition.
The Centre aims to build trust and understanding between Leicester’s various communities by providing grassroots opportunities for groups and individuals to encounter each other. It works also to promote 'religious literacy', enabling people working in the public sector and schools to better understand the identities and needs of different communities.
In this film, Dr John Maiden interviews Riaz Ravat, Deputy Director, about its work.
