Louis Massett grew up inside the Society of St. Pius X and spent his school years at the SSPX academy in St. Mary's, Kansas. In Traddyland: Memoir of a Radical Traditional Catholic, he writes about what that formation did to a family, a town, and a boy who believed every word of it.
Lou has told this story on a lot of podcasts. Before we taped, I asked him what nobody had asked him yet. He gave me two answers, and this conversation is built around both of them.
The first is radicalization itself. How does a devout Catholic family cross the line from love of tradition into something closed and controlling? What are the early markers? And why does it feel like faithfulness the entire time it is happening?
The second is classical education. Lou is a Christendom College graduate who has served as a teacher, coach, and headmaster in classical schools. He has firm views on what classical education actually is, where the label gets borrowed by people using it for something else, and how a parent can tell the difference between a school forming free minds and a school forming obedient ones.
