This is some footage from me restoring a Japanese made 8 lb splitting maul I found at a yard sale for $3.
I included a bit of footage of it in action splitting hard oak, it performed pretty good.
So why a splitting maul? well frankly its a really good way to split large stumps of wood into more manageable pieces of wood. And split wood burns much hotter than a stump. The main application this sort of tool is useful for is splitting firewood at a cabin, homestead or any other home type setting where you need to split large pieces of wood. I would NOT take this camping/bushcrafting...it just does not have that kind of application.
