The content and focus of my research pertains to the physical and conceptual exploration of liminal spaces and the way their forms evolve. By its original definition, “liminality” refers to the crossing of the threshold from one state of being to another. That definition still applies today however now most people see and understand this idea wherein the physical space itself is either the threshold or is a state of transition. Some examples include dead malls, empty offices/classrooms, and closed off stores.
This research on liminality is what inspired my senior thesis project. I am especially fixated on the idea of that nothing is permanent, so the video piece that I have created incorporates elements that phase in and out of time as the video progresses, abstracting and reforming themselves. The footage I captured is primarily of abandoned spaces which no longer serve the public. These are spaces such as empty classrooms and dead malls.
The relation of the locations chosen to be filmed in regards to the research is that these spaces were personal to me, whether it be revisiting my childhood elementary school, or witnessing the decay of the malls–places of gathering taken out of their original contexts and morphing and changing into something else or disappearing entirely.
