This is the orchestral work "The Souls of Ancient Bells" taken from the 2014 CD "Statements", which contains student composer works of the Michigan State University School of Music.
About this piece from the composer:
"The Souls of Ancient Bells" is conceived as a concerto for carillon and orchestra, inspired by the Beaumont Tower carillon at MSU. A slow prologue introduces two themes: an ascending motive evoking the height and grandeur of bell towers, and a “chorale” of iterations of “tolling” figures reminiscent of Westminster quarters. The two themes develop amid a frenzied texture, building to an ecstatic climax. The title is from a poem by Kenneth Patchen called "Be Music, Night."

COMPOSER: Philip Rice
CONDUCTOR: Gretchen Renshaw James
ORCHESTRA: Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra
