In this educational Vocal Coach analysis, Beth Roars breaks down Eminem’s “Stan” from The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), exploring the storytelling, vocal delivery and one of the most haunting sampling choices in hip-hop history. She analyses the music video, starring Dido alongside Devon Sawa as Stan.
Beth looks at how Dido’s breathy, intimate vocal, sampled from “Thank You”, is transformed through context. With her light tone, soft onsets and suspended phrasing becoming darker each time the sample returns, a peaceful voice Stan can’t hear. Beth analyses Eminem’s storytelling mastery as Stan: How the character’s voice changes through intonation, pitch and rhythm shifts, harsher consonants, articulation, vocal grit, dynamic build and the increasingly shouted quality as fails to create the intimacy he desires and unravels.
From the naturalistic first letter to the haunting final tape, this breakdown explores how Eminem uses vocal colour, pacing, stress, breath, diction and dramatic irony to create one of rap’s most tragic narratives.
