On April 8th, 2024, North America witnessed a spectacular solar eclipse! The moon, in a cosmic game of hide-and-seek with Earth and the sun, blocked the sun completely for a few minutes in a zone stretching from Mexico to Maine (US) and Canada (Ontario to Newfoundland), making it dark for a bit. This rare event, the last one happening in North America in 2017, showcased the perfect alignment that causes eclipses, and won't be seen again in this region until 2042.
For filmmaker Uladzimir Taukachou, the chance to witness a total solar eclipse was one to take advantage of. Having previously documented only partial eclipses, Uladzimir embarked on a journey north, a mere five-hour drive separating him from the totality path in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Armed with his Blackmagic URSA 12K camera, a powerful Sigma 150-600mm lens for capturing the sun's details, and a Manfrotto tripod for stability, Uladzimir arrived well before the celestial event. The early morning start ensured they bypassed city traffic, allowing them to explore the area. A blanket of snow still clung to parts of the forest floor, a stark contrast to the fiery spectacle they were about to witness.
As totality approached, Uladzimir joined a throng of eclipse enthusiasts who had converged on the location. With cameras set up and solar filters in place, anticipation filled the air. Then, the moment arrived. Darkness descended, revealing a breathtaking display of stars against the eclipsed sun. The sight, Uladzimir admits, defied description. The experience left a profound impact, prompting them to immediately research the next total eclipse, a testament to the awe-inspiring power of these astronomical events.
