Just like all the big Apple devices from the time, the iPhone 3G was introduced by Steve Jobs back in 2008, at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, in San Francisco. Jobs presented a stronger iPhone that was going to sell for a much cheaper price than the original, as well as a plan to ship the device to 70 countries within the first year of sales.

The device finally hit the market on July 11th 2008. The 8 GB version sold for 199, and the 16 GB version sold for 299 US dollars. The success it had is best described with the fact that it sold in one million units in its opening weekend. That’s a number of sold units that took the original iPhone 74 days to reach.

But really how different are the 3G and the 1st gen? A frontal glimpse at the two devices doesn’t really reveal that many differences. Aesthetically, the biggest change can be seen when comparing the two phones from the back, as the aluminum cover had been replaced with a full plastic one. Hardware wise, the iPhone 3G was powered by the same CPU and had the same amount of RAM as the 1st generation iPhone. But if we take a closer look, we can see that the 3G did indeed have a few hardware and software features that the original iPhone didn’t.
