From education, skills training, and job creation, to industrial return, technological innovation and spinoffs, tackling climate change, protecting the environment, and promoting the arts and Indigenous knowledge, the SKA project is testament to the power of science to help address societal challenges.
In September 2025, the SKAO, the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory and the South African Department for Science Technology and Innovation jointly hosted high-level representatives from the G20 and other nations on the South African SKA site. 25 countries sent delegations to learn more about the project and the tangible benefits it is having for society.
We spoke to colleagues on site and representatives of countries involved in delivering hardware for the SKA-Mid telescope about this wider impact the SKA Observatory and its partners are having by delivering a cutting-edge radio telescope in the Karoo.
