The Romulan V30 Winged Defender design comes from the tabletop game, the Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator, published by FASA in 1986.
It remains my favorite Romulan ship and my 2nd favorite all time Star Trek ship - this video goes over how and why it works!
