Jane was born in the rectory at Steventon that stood in this field. She grew up here with her siblings and wrote the first version of Northanger Abbey here in 1798. Behind the house was a grassy slope.

Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey lived in a rectory or vicarage with her father the vicar and her brothers and sisters, like Jane. In chapter one it says "she loved nothing so well in the world as rolling down the green slopes at the back of the house."
