Rob Fargo is a sociologist with over two decades of experience in public education. Whether teaching, doing research, or managing educational programs, he has criticized the system’s groupthink and advocated for more transparency and debate, particularly around equity, identity, and school spending policies. He argues that we should be teaching students how to think, not what to think, and that educational systems are not doing enough to encourage diversity of thought and model the kind of constructive, democratic discussion needed to solve social problems.
Rob was raised Catholic in a working-class suburb of Cleveland, becoming a first-generation college student. His career began as an AmeriCorps member serving in urban elementary schools. After working in schools in some of California’s most notorious neighborhoods, he pursued a graduate degree in order to consider the social problems he witnessed through an academic lens. Rob trained to become a community college professor, going on to teach at multiple schools as an adjunct instructor and receive a teaching excellence award. Most recently, he has worked in institutional research for a K-12 school district and served in union leadership roles. Rob is a long-time vegan advocate for animal rights, an accomplished songwriter, and an avid motorcyclist, living in California with his wife and their cats.
