During USS Bunker Hill’s final drive across the Central Pacific in early 1945, she took part in the decisive Battle of Iwo Jima and the 5th Fleet raids against Honshū and the Nansei Shoto. Her aircraft also attacked Imperial Japanese Navy forces in the East China Sea before coming face to face with the world's largest battleship: Yamato.
Yamato was taking part in the last significant Japanese naval operation in the Pacific Theater and was screened by one light cruiser and eight destroyers. Together, they steamed toward the Allied fleet to interfere with their invasion of Okinawa.
The Allied Task Force immediately attacked the Japanese convoy with all their might and, in a remarkable turn of events, sent the cruiser, four destroyers, and Yamato to the bottom of the ocean.
