A 2D Online Role Playing Game (RPG) emerged in the market, and it became an instant hit. "A step in the right direction for online RPG's", as many critics stated. DERP Online (Digital Environment for Role Playing Online), published by Halfware Interactive, was an instant hit, as it's simplicity and overall size invited players to just explore the virtual universe and become whatever they wanted in any of the dozens of worlds. However, they all shared one rule: you lose all of your lifes, and there's no respawning.
With time, controversy came. Downloadable content started emerging. "Access to new worlds for $20", "Instant level-up for 30$", "An extra life for $15". It all came with a price tag, and the most gullible and ambitious players couldn't resist the temptation. All of a sudden, DERP stopped being a game of skills and became a land of microtransactions.
And then... THE SHADOW came, to make matters better or worse.
