This is a review of "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reed. Despite its commercial success and its sustained presence on the New York Times bestseller list since 2017, I found the book unengaging and tedious. I attribute this to the stagnant nature of the story and characters, particularly the central characters, Monique and Evelyn, who remain unchanged throughout the novel. The narrative, focused on power and control within Hollywood show business, is repetitive, lacking depth in character development and exploration of the art of acting, which is central to the story.

I highlight the book's treatment of identity as a secret, the cynical portrayal of the public, and the unrealistic detail in characters' recollections. I appreciate the examination of love and power relationships and the inclusion of multiple perspectives, but overall find the book self-indulgent and lacking artistic depth.
