Surface piercing foils are used on foil boards and many small recreational hydrofoils. When the craft rises, less foil remains underwater, reducing lift and bringing it back down naturally.

This creates a simple self stabilizing system that works well in calm water. The tradeoff is a less consistent ride when waves change the depth of the foils.
