Before Thunderbirds became what we know it today, a camera crew was given rare access to the studios where it, along with its predecessor, Stingray, was being brought to life.
This clip, taken from a 1960s behind-the-scenes documentary, pulls back the curtain on the production techniques that made Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation shows a worldwide phenomenon. Stingray was already a global hit, and here we see how a team of nearly 100 technicians produced a brand-new 60-minute film every single week, built around fiberglass puppets made almost alive through painstaking artistry, with their lips moving in sync with speech via electric impulses. Puppetry was truly brought into the 20th century.
