The Secret to Memorizing Music Fast!

Many people have a hard time memorizing, especially when we have so many distractions all around us…like our phones, computers, and TV.

Believe it or not, I am someone that has a hard time memorizing music! Trust me, it is so frustrating to me sometimes. I will sing a song over and over again, but it still takes me a while to memorize a full song. I have discovered that if I bring in different kinds of memory and senses, I am able to memorize a lot more quickly and efficiently with the short amount of time I usually have to learn a song.

I read a few music articles and here are the facts to help with memorization. There are four kinds of memory and senses that we use in music: visual, auditory, motor memory, and analyzing.

1. Visual Memory. Visual memory is memorizing with your eyes. For example, you remember the way the sheet music looks; lyrics and music resemble objects, places, animals, people or a character. You may even associate a song with a movie clip.

2. Auditory Memory. Memorizing using your ears. This means you remember the melody, harmony, lyrics and what they sound like.

3. Motor Memory. Motor memory is when you memorize how things feel to sing the song. You go into an “autopilot” mode. Motor memory, however, is the LEAST DEPENDABLE kind of memory, because if you forget a passage or your lyrics while performing it’s hard to get back on track. Repetition is what builds motor memory. Make sure you use other types of memory at the same time like auditory or visual when relying on motor memory.

4. Analyzing. Make sure you understand the song you are singing. This is how you interpret the underlying meaning, lyrics, character and structure of the song. I always ask my students what the song is about after singing a song for the first time and most of them look at me and reply….”I don’t know.”

That’s when together, we take the song and we start looking at the lyrics. This is the BEST kind of memory and analyzing is the most secure kind of memory!
Listed below are articles I used to understand memorization more in depth.
