My drawing skills took years to improve. My sketchbook pages started looking better almost overnight.
When I came back to drawing in my late 30s, after twenty years away, I picked up right where I'd left off in high school — stiff drawings floating in the middle of the page, and me, frustrated with all of them. Then I made a discovery that changed what a sketchbook even was: I could treat it like a magazine. A magazine about my life, with a circulation of one.
This is the story of that discovery — the high school sketchbook where the whole thing started, the thirty-year design education I didn't realize I was getting, how I steal layouts from magazines and cereal boxes, and why good-looking pages gave me the cover I needed to keep drawing until my drawing caught up.
