Most people have seen the classic U.S. military canteen cup—but many have never noticed this clever feature built into the early 1910-style folding handle.
The handle design allowed a GI to use his fork to manipulate and lift the hot canteen cup from the fire, keeping his hands away from the heated metal.
It’s a simple piece of old-school field engineering that still makes sense more than a century later.
