About the author: Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish doctor and author, celebrated for his world-famous creation Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective who set the standard for crime fiction into the 20th century and beyond. In addition to his Holmes stories, Conan Doyle is also remembered for his fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, including 'The Parasite' and 'The Lost World' series of novels, his historical fiction, and for numerous short stories contributed to magazines over a 40 year period. He was knighted by King Edward VII in the 1902 Coronation Honours.

'The Sealed Room' first appeared in the Strand Magazine in the September 1898 issue, part of a series of mystery and suspense short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle published under the umbrella title 'Round the Fire Stories' between June 1898 and May 1899. After the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes in the 1893 story The Final Problem, the Strand (which had originally published all the Holmes short stories to date) was keen to retain Doyle's talents and persuaded him to compose this new series of unrelated tales. The series proved to be popular with readers in both England and America, and were later published in book form (under the slightly abbreviated title 'Round the Fire') in 1908.
