This week we return to a location we did last year, with the Explorer Returns to see if we could continue the investigation where it left off.
Ashdown House is a former school on the edge of Ashdown Forest in Sussex, founded in the late 1800s. For more than a century, it operated as a traditional British boarding school, educating generations of pupils, including Boris Johnson in the 1970s. Since its closure in 2020, the site has been left abandoned. Much of the building remains intact, with classrooms, dormitories, and corridors largely undisturbed.
In the years following its closure, former staff and local residents have reported unexplained noises inside the house, doors closing on their own, footsteps where no one is present, and occasional lights seen after dark. No clear cause has ever been identified. While such accounts are impossible to verify, the isolation of the site and the long periods of silence have given Ashdown House a reputation as a place where the past appears reluctant to leave.
