The Catechetical School of Alexandria was the first Christian institution of higher learning. It flourished in the city of Alexandria, the intellectual center of the Roman Empire, during the persecutions of the second, third, and fourth centuries A.D. Under the leadership of such teachers as Pantaenus, Clement, Origen, and Dionysius, this school taught a method of Scriptural interpretation used by many of the great Church Fathers, remaining at the heart of traditional Scriptural study to this day. In addition, the school attempted to reconcile Greek culture and Christian faith and upheld orthodox Christianity against increasing numbers of heretical teachings.
