Bartolo Longo was born in 1841 in Puglia, southern Italy, into a devout family. As a young lawyer in Naples he abandoned his faith, drifted into spiritism, and was ultimately consecrated a priest in a secret satanic sect. Hallucinations, depression, and suicidal thoughts brought him to the edge of ruin, until a childhood friend and a Dominican priest led him back to the Church. Broken and desperate in the Valley of Pompeii, he heard a voice urging him to spread devotion to the Rosary. From that moment came the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, two recognized miracles (including the origin of the famous 54-Day Novena), and an unprecedented charitable mission for orphans and the children of prisoners.
