The San Diego Museum of Art and Foster + Partners introduce a new vision for the Museum, transforming an existing space into a community asset that improves quality of life for future visitors, tourists, San Diego residents and the native ecosystem.
Designing a future extension of the Museum, Foster + Partners propose flexible galleries, doubling the exhibition area, including an immersive digital space on the lower level.
Purpose-built storage for the collection will also increase capacity and allow the public to glimpse behind the scenes at what is in storage or being researched and prepared for exhibition.
A community engagement pavilion located at the end of the sculpture garden will provide art experiences for people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and abilities.
Foster + Partners share a commitment to an all-electric museum, for a net-zero-carbon cultural project. Use of low-carbon materials with mass timber will be used wherever possible (pavilion, restaurant, roof, and atrium) and local tile and reclaimed wood used throughout. On-site production of renewable energy will be provided by photovoltaic panels.
This model reflects an overall vision, to be introduced in phases, and is currently in a design stage.
