The smell hit him first. Rotting fish and salt and something else, something sweet and wrong. His eyes cracked open to blinding white light reflecting off water, and for several seconds, he had no idea who he was.
The deck beneath him was sticky. His shirt was crusted to his skin. When he tried to move, his joints screamed. He was lying in the open cockpit of a sailboat, surrounded by ocean on every side, stretching to the horizon in all directions. Not another vessel in sight. No land. Just water and sky and the creaking of rigging overhead.
He tried to remember his name. Nothing. Where he was going. Nothing. How he got here. A wall of static where memories should be.
