Being buried alive was a very real possibility in the 1800s. Luckily, there was a certain invention to put that fear to rest

Although it wasn't very common, there were several reports of people that had possibly been buried alive. Their bodies had been exhumed for various reasons, but their bodies would be found in odd and unnatural positions and their caskets would be lined with deep scratches from fingernails.
With these stories, who knows how many more people were sent to their grave by mistake.
This eventually paved the way for the safety coffin. A buried coffin, but with a string leading to the surface. This string would be tied around the dead's wrist and would be able to ring a bell on the surface if the dead wasn't...well, dead. The ringing would alert the nightwatchmen and they would be able to possibly pull them from their untimely grave.
Unfortunately, the safety coffin has never been reported to save any lives and it was gone as quickly as it came
