While the land battle raged at Thermopylae, a crucial naval engagement was also unfolding concurrently at Artemisium, off the coast of Euboea. This naval confrontation was inextricably linked to the land defence; the Greek strategy relied on both positions holding. The Greek fleet, composed primarily of Athenian triremes, faced the much larger Persian navy. Themistocles' strategic intent was to use the narrow straits to their advantage, limiting the Persian ability to deploy their overwhelming numbers effectively, creating a maritime choke-point mirroring Thermopylae’s land-based one.
