Drummer Barry Wom takes the lead in the Rutles equivalent of a Ringo Starr song like "Act Naturally."
This was a little bit awkward to edit, due to how simple the editing is in the 1978 film, and how fragmentary the "Rutles 2" material is.
In the 1978 film, one shot covers a verse and chorus of the song, with closeups of Dirk and Stig. One shot also covers the entire wedding, in the style of a silent-film comedy. "The Rutles 2" outtakes show parts of an alternate take of the wedding, which is almost identical, but does not show it in full. As per usual, the "Rutles 2" material is slightly higher quality, and has a different look than the 1978 movie footage. Using it meant that I had to cut back and forth quite a bit, and put closeups and inserts inbetween to make it work. So it's a much choppier edit than what the original film presents.
This is compounded by how "Rutles 2" presents additional footage from the song itself. As a joke of sorts, the footage is cut to fit the 1997 song "Easy Listening." Barry is shown singing as little as possible, since this wouldn't match, and we hold on B-roll of the other members of the band. (This leads into 2002 Eric Idle doing schtick about "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" while ignoring the subtler joke the song is actually doing.) I've synced Barry's singing and drumming back up, as best I could. Most of it is from the chorus "Living in Hope." Repeating Dirk and Stig's closeups (cleaned up to remove dirt and glue) ties this together as a more complete vrsion of the chorus. It's still a bit fragmentary. In some cases footage is repeated or slowed down to fill short gaps. This doesn't work especially well, partly because Barry is drumming onscreen, which limits what can be done.
As usual, Rutles 2 footage is IVTCed and deinterlaced to catch stray frames. As usual, Rutles (1978) movie footage is color boosted and its contrast reduced (from the 2001 DVD). A few closeups of wedding guests appear in The Rutles 2 in other contexts. These are not used here. Captions are removed from shots of the band and their teenage admirers, using Photoshop, Rife, etc. Captions could not be successfully removed from shots of Barry and Stig early on. Some dirt and glue is removed in Photoshop.
The 2001 DVD has serious frame rate problems, often repeating or skipping frames throughout. This does not occur during this sequence thankfully, and I think the only shot affected here is one of Barry walking with his "bride," which I haven't bothered to fix at this point.
